Tommy Hilfiger is the most recognised sponsor in motorsport and one of the least attributed
Tommy Hilfiger records 99.1 percent recognition on the motorsport audience, the highest of any brand tested and 54.6 percent attribution. The full 2026 reading.
Almost nobody fails to name the Tommy Hilfiger flag. Barely half of the audience can say whose car it belonged to, which is the widest gap between the two questions measured this season.
The reading comes from the BoxBoxd Brand Recall Index, a test the motorsport audience takes on the platform through the 2026 season. A sponsor logo appears blurred with no name attached and the audience answers three questions in order: name the brand, name the team it belongs to, then say where the branding appears on the car.
Tommy Hilfiger was tested 538 times. 99.1 percent named the brand, 54.6 percent attributed it to the right team and 15.4 percent said where it appears.
Three teams in three decades
Tommy Hilfiger has been in the sport since 1991, when the brand ran on the Lotus 102B and 107 with branding on the airbox and engine cover.
A clothing partnership with Ferrari followed from 1998 to 2002, then an apparel partnership with Mercedes from 2018 to 2024, before Adidas took the apparel role for 2025.
That history is the reading. Recognition of 99.1 percent is the highest of any brand tested, ahead of Santander and Marlboro. Attribution of 54.6 percent is the second lowest. The gap of 44.5 points is the widest in the set.
Placement is lower again at 15.4 percent, the lowest of the eleven brands. Apparel branding lives on a driver suit, a team polo and a paddock backdrop rather than a fixed panel of a car, so there is no single surface for the audience to point at.
What a fashion partnership buys and what it does not
A brand that everybody already knows enters motorsport with the first question answered. Recognition is not the thing it needs to buy. The reason to be in the sport is association, the transfer of a team identity onto the brand and that is the question this partnership loses.
Three teams across three decades is the mechanism. Each association overwrites part of the last one.
A respondent who grew up with the Ferrari clothing deal answers Ferrari, one who watched the Lotus livery answers Lotus, one who follows the current grid answers Mercedes. All three are correct at some point in the brand history and only one is correct on the test.
Does the answer change with allegiance?
Sorted by the team each respondent supports, Tommy Hilfiger attribution runs from 62.1 percent among Ferrari fans to 31.7 percent among Williams fans, a spread of 30.4 points. No team audience clears seventy percent, which is what separates a distributed brand history from a single team association.

Mercedes
WilliamsThe reading in context
Set against Marlboro, the comparison is exact. Both brands are recognised by more than 98 percent of the audience. Marlboro is attributed by 97.4 percent and Tommy Hilfiger by 54.6 percent. One brand ran on one team in one colour for decades. The other moved.
For an apparel partner the practical consequence is that exposure and recall reports will always look excellent while the association stays weak. The number to defend a renewal on is the second one and it is the one a media value report never shows.
