Marlboro has not been named on a car since 2008 and is still the best attributed brand on the grid

97.4 percent of the motorsport audience attribute the Marlboro logo to the right team, the highest score of any brand tested in 2026, eighteen years after the name left the cars.

The Marlboro name came off the cars in 2008. It records the highest attribution score of any brand on the 2026 test, ahead of every current partner in the sport.

The reading comes from the BoxBoxd Brand Recall Index, a test the motorsport audience takes on the platform through the 2026 season. A sponsor logo appears blurred with no name attached and the audience answers three questions in order: name the brand, name the team it belongs to, then say where the branding appears on the car.

Marlboro was tested 739 times. 98 percent named the brand, 97.4 percent attributed it to the right team and 31.8 percent said where it appears.

What the partnership was

Marlboro entered the sport in 1972 and ran the red and white livery on the McLaren cars from 1974 to 1996. Philip Morris has backed Ferrari since 1984 and the team raced as Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro from 1997.

The name disappeared from the livery in 2008 under the European tobacco advertising rules, replaced by a barcode that was itself dropped in 2010. The team carried Marlboro in its entry name until the end of 2011.

98 percent of the audience name the brand and 97.4 percent name the team, which is a gap of 0.6 points. Every current partner in the test loses more between the two questions than Marlboro does.

Why does an absent brand outperform current partners?

Three conditions hold in this case and in almost no other. The branding occupied the whole car rather than a panel. It stayed in the same colour for decades. It was tied to one team at a time with no competing association running alongside it.

Placement is the check on that. 31.8 percent placed the branding correctly, below KitKat and Honda, which is what a title livery produces: the audience knows the car was Marlboro without needing to point at a surface, because the surface was the car.

The finding is not an argument for tobacco money returning to the sport. It is a measurement of what duration and consistency do to attribution, on a brand that has had no new exposure for a decade and still beats partnerships signed last season.

Does the answer change with allegiance?

Sorted by the team each respondent supports, Marlboro attribution runs from 99.4 percent among Ferrari fans to 95.7 percent among Red Bull Racing fans, a spread of 3.7 points. Ferrari fans attribute it best, which follows the last and longest of the two title eras.

What a current partner can take from it

A brand entering the sport now is buying a panel rather than a car, sharing the livery with a dozen other partners and often changing team inside five years. The Marlboro reading is the ceiling that structure is competing against.

Vodafone shows the same pattern on a shorter run. It last appeared on a McLaren in 2013 and records 92.4 percent attribution, above every technology partner currently on the grid.

Frequently asked questions
