McLaren, 2026. The sidepod that carried the red wordmark until the end of 2013.

The red Vodafone wordmark came off the McLaren sidepod at the end of 2013. It is still attributed to the right team by more of the audience than any technology partner currently on the grid.

The reading comes from the BoxBoxd Brand Recall Index, a test the motorsport audience takes on the platform through the 2026 season. A sponsor logo appears blurred with no name attached and the audience answers three questions in order: name the brand, name the team it belongs to, then say where the branding appears on the car.

Vodafone was tested 419 times. 96.9 percent named the brand, 92.4 percent attributed it to the right team and 43.9 percent said where it appears.

Two teams, one memory

Vodafone was a Ferrari partner from 2002 to 2006 and the McLaren title sponsor from 2007 to 2013, with the giant red wordmark on the sidepod through the Hamilton and Button years.

Recognition of 96.9 percent is sixth in the set. Attribution of 92.4 percent is third, ahead of TeamViewer, Honda and Oracle, all of them current partners with live exposure every weekend.

What a title era leaves behind

Placement of 43.9 percent is above the grid average of 42.7 percent, a decade after the last car ran. The audience remembers a surface, a colour and a size and the sidepod wordmark satisfied all three.

The Ferrari years before it barely register in the answers, which is the same overwrite effect visible in the Tommy Hilfiger reading, except here the second era was long, single coloured and covered the most visible panel on the car.

What a sponsorship buys, on this evidence, is not exposure during the contract. It is a memory that keeps paying after it and the size of that residue is set by how consistent the branding was rather than by how much of it there was.

Does the answer change with allegiance?

Sorted by the team each respondent supports, Vodafone attribution runs from 97.7 percent among McLaren fans to 85.2 percent among Red Bull Racing fans, a spread of 12.5 points. McLaren fans lead, which follows the title era and no audience falls below eighty five percent.

The reading against the current grid

Set against the technology partners active in 2026, the comparison is uncomfortable. Vodafone, with no presence, records 92.4 percent. Oracle, a title partner in its fifth season, records 65.6 percent.

A partnership that ended ten years ago should not outperform one running now. That it does is a measurement of how much of a sponsorship result is decided by consistency of surface rather than by the size of the current deal.
